What does a water softener actually do?

A softener trades the calcium and magnesium in your water for sodium. That happens at a bed of resin, and it's called ion exchange. It's the one home method that takes hardness out instead of working around it.

Hardness gets reported two ways, which is why quotes are hard to compare. One is milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. That's the same thing as ppm. The other is grains per gallon. One grain per gallon is 17.1 mg/L.

USGS sorts water by the mg/L figure. Soft is 0 to 60. Moderately hard is 61 to 120. Hard is 121 to 180. Very hard is anything above 180.

Convert those and you get the grain numbers the trade uses daily. Under 3.5 gpg is soft. 3.5 to 7 is moderately hard. 7 to 10.5 is hard. Above 10.5 is very hard. That's our conversion of the USGS classes, not a scale USGS publishes in grains.

Does Jacksonville have hard water?

Clay is the one that surprises people. It has the most wells in the metro and only moderate hardness. Separately measured JEA readings of 7 to 8 gpg around Orange Park line up with that.

St. Johns and Baker have no hardness data in the domestic well band, so we don't guess for them. Across the full well dataset the median is 16.4 gpg. That's a dataset median with all of that spread inside it. It isn't a statement about your house.

WHY THE WATER IS HARD

Why is the water hard here?

The Floridan aquifer is carbonate limestone under all of Florida and parts of the states next door, about 100,000 square miles of it. USGS calls it one of the most productive aquifers in the world.

Water is a good solvent. On the way through, it dissolves calcium and magnesium and carries them along. USGS mapping puts Duval's Floridan hardness at 250 to 300 mg/L. JEA's own source wells reach that rock 800 to 1,000 feet down. Same limestone whether your water arrives by city main or by well pump.

HOW IT GETS SIZED

How do you size a softener for my house?

Sizing is hardness times how much water your household actually uses. Daily grain load is your compensated hardness in gpg, times people, times gallons per person per day.

The resin bed gets sized so regeneration lands on a sensible cycle at an efficient salt dose. Not at the unit's top rating. A softener pushed to its ceiling removes more grains per regeneration and fewer grains per pound of salt. That difference shows up on your salt bill every month, for as long as you own it.

Compensated matters when there's dissolved iron in the water. Iron loads the resin the same way hardness does. Uncompensated iron fouls the bed and shortens the system's life. So capacity gets added on top of the raw hardness number.

A properly sized softener can carry dissolved iron at low levels. Past that it needs an oxidizing filter ahead of it. The exact adder and the exact ceiling are trade rules of thumb, not lab-verified constants. So we won't print a number here. Your test result sets it.

Metered or timer regeneration?

Metered, always. A metered valve counts the gallons you actually use. It regenerates when the resin bed gets near capacity.

A timer regenerates on a clock whether that capacity got used or not. So it wastes salt and water on a quiet week. And it risks hard water breaking through on a heavy one.

Published savings percentages for metered valves come from manufacturers, and they don't agree with each other. So take the mechanism and leave the number.

Is a salt-free system a water softener?

No. Salt-free systems use template-assisted crystallization. It turns hardness minerals into crystal forms that resist sticking to surfaces. Scale gets inhibited. The calcium and magnesium stay in the water, and a hardness test after one still reads hard.

There are homes where that's the right call anyway. Salt handling isn't practical everywhere, and the drain line isn't always there. Just know what you bought. We call them conditioners or scale inhibitors, because calling one a softener isn't accurate.

Tankless units dropped from 80% to 72% and needed deliming at 1.6 years. Low-flow showerheads on unsoftened water clogged after 3,203 gallons on average. Every softened one finished the test.
