What is a well water treatment system?
It's a line of components, not one box on the wall. Water comes in from the well, passes through each stage in order and leaves the last stage ready to use. Which stages you get depends on what your water carries, and nothing else.
A home with hard water and nothing else needs a sediment pre-filter and a softener. A home with hard water, orange staining and a bacteria result needs four stages, in a set order. Same well field, different builds. That’s why we don’t quote before we test.

WHY SEQUENCE DECIDES THE BUILD
Why does the order matter?
Because every stage protects the one behind it. Sediment goes first. A sediment cartridge is the cheapest part in the train. It keeps grit out of softener valves, media beds and UV lamps.
Oxidation and filtration come before the softener. Iron that reaches the resin untreated fouls it and shortens the system’s life. So we catch the iron first.
If your water is acidic, a calcite neutralizer sits ahead of the softener too. EPA’s secondary range for pH is 6.5 to 8.5. Calcite dissolves slowly and brings the pH back up.
It also adds a little calcium, which raises hardness. That’s why a neutralizer and a softener usually travel together instead of replacing each other.
UV goes last. It kills what passes through it and fixes nothing else, so the end of the line is the only place it belongs. It needs 5-micron filtration ahead of it, because particles shade microbes from the light.
The lamp gets swapped once a year, since its output fades before the bulb looks dead. That swap is a care visit, not something you have to remember.

What does a well around Jacksonville actually carry?
Hardness, in this aquifer, near enough to always. Everything else is a maybe your test answers.
The maybes worth naming: iron, if you’re seeing orange staining. Sulfur, if you smell rotten eggs. Tannins, if the water runs the color of weak tea. Low pH, if the water is acidic. Bacteria, if a lab result comes back positive. None of those are things we assume about your well. They’re things we check.
WHY THE WATER IS HARD HERE
Why is the water hard here?
The Floridan aquifer is carbonate limestone under all of Florida and parts of the states next door, about 100,000 square miles of it. USGS calls it one of the most productive aquifers in the world.
Water dissolves calcium and magnesium out of that rock and carries them to your tap. USGS maps Duval’s Floridan hardness at 250 to 300 mg/L, or 14.6 to 17.5 grains per gallon.

Read the middle row carefully. Clay has more wells than any county in the metro and only moderate hardness, so a metro-average number quoted in Orange Park is overclaiming. Duval clears the very-hard mark in 94% of samples; Nassau in 100%, of a small sample. These are area readings, not measurements of your house.
In an accelerated lab test on 26 gpg water, unsoftened gas storage heaters fell from 70.4% to 67.4% efficiency and scaled about 528 grams a year against 7 softened. Tankless dropped from 80% to 72%, deliming at 1.6 years. Caveats attached: lab protocol, test water harder than local, a softening-industry funder.

What does the test measure, and what goes to a lab?
Our in-home test reads hardness, iron, pH, TDS and chlorine on site, while you watch. For bacteria, lead or PFAS we help you get a certified lab test. Coliform is a culture, and no dropper kit does it honestly.
Florida’s health department asks well owners to test for bacteria and nitrate once a year, and lead every three years, always at a state-certified lab. County health departments run the sampling for about $20 to $30 a sample.
In Duval, local rules require a test on any new or repaired well, and the county samples wells near known contamination sources. That’s a call worth making whether or not you ever talk to us.

HOW IT GETS SIZED
How is a system sized?
Off your numbers, not a household average. Hardness is reported in grains per gallon or in milligrams per liter, and 1 gpg is 17.1 mg/L. USGS calls anything above 180 mg/L very hard, which works out to 10.5 gpg.
Sizing is your hardness, raised a little for any dissolved iron, times what your household uses in a day. That sets the resin bed. We pick the bed so it regenerates on a sensible cycle at an efficient salt dose, not at the softener’s top rating.
One rule we don’t bend: metered regeneration, never a timer. A metered valve counts gallons and regenerates when the bed is nearly spent. A timer runs on a clock whether you used the capacity or not. That wastes salt and water on a quiet week, and lets hard water through on a busy one.
What about septic?
A Virginia Tech study for the Water Quality Research Foundation found that efficient softeners don’t harm septic tanks and may help them. Very inefficient ones may affect the solids reaching the drain field. The honest reading: a well-set softener is septic-safe. Not that a softener is good for your septic system.

Common questions about well water treatment
Can you drink water from a well in Florida?
Yes. Nobody tests a private well but the owner, so Florida’s health department recommends bacteria and nitrate at least once a year and lead every three years, always through a state-certified lab. County health departments run the sampling, roughly $20 to $30 a sample. Hardness and iron are separate questions, and aesthetic ones.
Is Florida well water hard or soft?
It depends where the well is. In our dataset Duval wells sit around 17.2 grains per gallon and Nassau around 16.0, both very hard, while Clay reads about 5.4, which is moderate. St. Johns and Baker have no hardness data in the domestic band at all. Yours needs its own number.
How often should I test my well?
At least once a year for bacteria and nitrate, and every three years for lead, through a state-certified laboratory. That’s Florida Department of Health guidance, and county health departments run the sampling programs at roughly $20 to $30 per sample. In Duval, local rules require testing of newly constructed or repaired wells.
Do I need a softener, a filter or both?
Depends on the test. Hardness is a softener job, since ion exchange is what removes calcium and magnesium. Iron, sulfur, sediment and low pH are filter and media jobs. When a home needs both, the order is fixed: filtration ahead of the softener, so nothing fouls the resin. Your test tells us which.
