Is it your well, or your water heater?
Check where the smell shows up before you shop for anything. These are two different problems with two very different bills.
If the smell only arrives with hot water, the likely culprit is the water heater. Inside the tank sits a magnesium anode rod. It's there to corrode so the tank doesn't. It reacts with sulfate-reducing bacteria living in the tank, and hydrogen sulfide is what that reaction gives off.
The fix is an aluminum-zinc or powered anode rod, plus disinfecting the tank. Not a whole-house system. That guidance comes from a water heater maker's own service literature. It's one source rather than a body of research, so we'll attribute it plainly rather than dress it up.
If the smell is on both hot and cold, at more than one fixture, it's coming in from the well. That's the case where treatment is the right answer, and the rest of this page is about it.
How do I check which one it is?
Five minutes, no equipment.
- Run the cold tap in the kitchen for thirty seconds. Smell it.
- Run the hot tap at the same sink for thirty seconds, once it's really hot. Smell it.
- Repeat both at a bathroom sink on the other side of the house.
- Note which taps had it.
Hot only, at every fixture: the water heater. Both hot and cold, at every fixture: the well. Cold only, or one fixture only: something local to that line or that fixture. That one is worth a plumber's eyes first.

What is the rotten-egg smell?
Hydrogen sulfide, a dissolved gas. Your nose picks it up far below anything a meter cares about. That's why it's such an obvious complaint and such a small number on a lab sheet. EPA handles odor under its secondary standards, with a guideline of 3 TON. Secondary standards cover nuisance rather than health.
One thing we won't tell you: how common this is around here. Florida has 84 sulfide samples in total. Labs mostly run that test after somebody has already complained about a smell.
So the data reads high for a reason that has nothing to do with your well. There's no map on this page and no claim about wells in your area, because we don't have the evidence to make one.

WHAT TREATS IT
What treats hydrogen sulfide from the well?
Level decides. At low levels, catalytic carbon can adsorb and oxidize modest amounts on its own. At moderate levels and up, oxidation comes first. Air-injection oxidation is our standard.

Where does it sit in the treatment train?
Upstream of the softener, downstream of the sediment filter. Sediment goes first in every build, because grit shortens the life of everything behind it. What if the smell comes with slime or staining?
Then you're likely looking at bacteria in the well, not dissolved gas alone. Iron bacteria show up as reddish slime in toilet tanks and gelatinous buildup. They sometimes bring odor with them.
The fix starts at the well with shock chlorination, then ongoing treatment. A filter in the house doesn't control a bacterial population living outside it.

What if I'm on city water?
