Sizing, and what's in the water. Four things move the number.
- Hardness It varies more inside this metro than between metros. JEA delivers roughly 7 to 21.7 grains per gallon, depending on which wellfield serves you. On wells, Duval reads near 17.2 gpg while Clay reads a moderate 5.4.
- Household size Sizing is compensated hardness times the water your household actually uses in a day. More people means more grains per day. That means a bigger resin bed, so regeneration stays on a sensible cycle.
- Dissolved iron Iron a softener has to carry adds to the load it gets sized against. So it moves the sizing. It's one of the things the in-home test measures.
- Well or city Well water gets treated before it reaches the house. City water arrives already aerated and disinfected. Different starting point, different train, different price.

That depends on your hardness, and there's real evidence on the appliance side.
Battelle Memorial Institute ran a Water Quality Research Foundation study in 2009 on 30 water heaters over 90 days. It used an accelerated scaling protocol on roughly 26 gpg water.
Gas storage heaters on unsoftened water fell from 70.4% to 67.4% average efficiency at two years of equivalent service. Softened units held. Scale built up at about 528 grams a year unsoftened, against about 7 softened.
Tankless gas dropped from 80% to 72% and needed deliming at 1.6 years equivalent. Low-flow showerheads clogged after an average of 3,203 gallons unsoftened.
The caveats stay attached
