Why does the order matter?

Each stage sets up the one after it. Sediment protects everything downstream from grit. Oxidation pulls out iron and sulfur before they can coat the softener resin. The softener then handles hardness on clean water, and UV finishes by handling bacteria.

Put the softener first and iron will foul it fast, so sequence is not a detail, it is the whole job.

Does every well need all four steps?

No. Plenty of wells need only some of them. That is the point of testing first: you build the train your water actually calls for, and skip the stages it does not.
