Why is the water hard here in the first place?
The Floridan aquifer is carbonate limestone under all of Florida and parts of the states next door, about 100,000 square miles of it. USGS calls it one of the most productive aquifers in the world.
Water dissolves calcium and magnesium out of rock as it moves. That is why a limestone-fed supply arrives hard, whether it comes by city main or private well.
Why do two homes on the same street need different systems?
Because one may be on JEA and one on a well, and because JEA’s delivered hardness is not a single number either.
On city water, JEA does not soften. It aerates to strip sulfur, chlorinates to disinfect, then distributes. So hardness reaches your tap intact. Delivered hardness runs roughly 120 to 372 mg/L depending on your wellfield, about 7 to 21.7 grains per gallon.
On a well, you are the utility. Nobody tests it but you, and the treatment train depends entirely on what your own water carries.
What does the metro hardness data actually mean for you?
It is an area prior, then your tap. Block-group and county medians describe neighborhoods, never individual homes, and we treat them that way.
Confidence varies too, and it belongs in the copy rather than a footnote. Duval’s reading is the solid one, backed by three independent sources. Nassau and Clay rest on 68 and 64 samples, with depth bands unresolved. St. Johns and Baker have no reading at all, so we do not project a number onto them.
What hard water actually costs you
The best-documented answer is the Softened Water Benefit Study. Battelle ran it in 2009 for the Water Quality Research Foundation, testing 30 water heaters over 90 days. Gas storage heaters on unsoftened water fell from 70.4% to 67.4% efficiency at two years of equivalent service. Softened units held steady. Tankless units dropped from 80% to 72% and needed deliming at 1.6 years. Low-flow showerheads clogged after an average 3,203 gallons.
The caveats belong with the numbers. It was an accelerated lab protocol. The test water ran about 26 grains per gallon, harder than typical Jacksonville water. And the funder researches softening. Read it as direction, not as a promise about your bills.
What a visit looks like
